Evidence-Based Practices 2

Research supports the effectiveness of certain interventions with autistic individuals, also known as evidence-based practices (EBP). By completing this online course, you will learn some of the most commonly used EBPs with individuals with ASD. This is the second of two courses on EBPs using the AIM modules.

Course registration is a two-step process: 1) Register on AIM and 2) Register and pay on Ashland University's system. Once you have completed this two-step process, this course will be available to you on AIM at the start of the semester, September 9, 2024.

Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) - Updated
Estimated Time to Complete: 2 1/2 hours
Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) builds on learner initiations and interests and is particularly effective for developing communication, language, play, and social behaviors. PRT was designed to create a more efficient and effective intervention by enhancing four pivotal areas of learning: motivation, responsivity to multiple cues, self-management, and social initiations. By targeting these pivotal areas, learners make widespread and generalized improvements in other areas. Over the past 30 years+, PRT has gained a strong foundation of empirical evidence. This module will introduce PRT, the history, and cover the four pivotal areas.
Functional Communication Training

Functional communication training (FCT) is a practice that emerged from the research on functional behavioral assessment (FBA). Once the FBA has determined the function of a single interfering behavior, or a group of behaviors that all serve the same function, FCT is used to teach a new, communicative behavior that replaces the interfering behavior (i.e., the communicative behavior serves the same purpose as the interfering/target behavior). This module will provide information on the evidence-based practice, FCT.
Parent-Implemented Intervention
Estimated Time to Complete: 2 hours
Parent-implemented intervention, teaches parents to use individualized intervention practices with their child to help them acquire/increase skills and/or decrease interfering behaviors associated with ASD. This involves a multi-step process that includes determining needs of the family, outlining goals, developing an intervention plan, and training parents to apply the intervention. This module defines each step of the process, discusses procedures and practices, and provides examples to be used as models using this evidence-based intervention.
Task Analysis
Estimated Time to Complete: 2 hours
Task analysis is the process of breaking a skill into smaller, more manageable steps in order to teach the skill. As the smaller steps are mastered, the learner becomes increasingly independent in his or her ability to perform the larger skill. This module will provide information on task analysis.
Naturalistic Intervention - Updated
Estimated Time to Complete: 1 1/2 hours
Naturalistic intervention is a collection of practices including environmental arrangement, interaction techniques, and strategies based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) principles. These practices are designed to encourage specific target behaviors based on learners' interests by building more complex skills that are naturally reinforcing and appropriate to the interaction. This module will provide information on the evidence-based strategy of naturalistic intervention.
Computer-Aided Instruction

Computer-aided instruction (CAI) is the use of computers to teach academic skills, promote communication and language development, and teach learners with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) to recognize and predict others' emotions. Due to ever-changing computer technology and the rapid introduction of computer software into the educational market, this module will focus on the salient aspects of CAI and how to choose computer software that has been shown to be effective with learners with ASD.
Social Narratives
Estimated Time to Complete: 1 hour
Social narratives are visually represented stories that describe social situations and socially appropriate responses or behaviors to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) understand social situations in a new way and to help them to acquire and use appropriate social skills. The term social narratives may be defined as a specific strategy (see guidelines below) but also as a group of additional interventions that are similar in that they address social understanding but differ in the specific procedures utilized. In this module we will first describe the specific ten-step strategy to creating social narratives that address a specific behavior concern. We will then provide a brief overview of other social narrative strategies.
Modeling
Estimated Time to Complete: 1 hour
In this module, you will learn all about how to implement modeling, the different types of modeling procedures, and the benefits for each individual modeling procedure. In addition you will learn why modeling can be effective for teaching new skills to learners with autism.
