Reflection Questions
The Reflection Questions document can be downloaded at any time and used in a variety of ways. You can view it before starting your work so that you know which questions will be asked in the videos and/or on the webpages. You can also access it at the end of your work so that you can see all your responses to the questions. This tool can be helpful for documenting your learning and referring to later or for sharing it with others in group discussions or as demonstration of your online progress.
Discussion Questions
The Discussion Questions provided below can supplement and extend your individual learning and be used by facilitators or coaches to prompt meaningful discussions.
Q: What types of skills are most appropriate for using discrete trial training?
A: A correct answer should include a statement such as:
- Discrete trial training is appropriate for skills that can be broken down into small, discrete steps.
- Discrete trial training can be used with most skills that have a clear beginning, middle and end.
- The skills taught using discrete trial training need to be broken down into steps using task analysis.
Q: What needs to take place before starting the discrete trial training?
A: A correct answer should include statements such as:
- The learner's team should be consulted to identify a target behavior, complete a task analysis for the target behavior and collect data on baseline skills for the target behavior. For example, if the target behavior is washing hands, what steps required for successful hand washing is the learner currently completing?
- It is important to identify a target skill, break the skill down into steps and collect data regarding the current skill level of the learner.
- Data collection materials need to be gathered and baseline data collected on the target skill or behavior. The target skill also needs to be broken down into steps. Reinforcers also need to be identified.
Q: What is the best way to determine what reinforcers will be most appropriate for an individual learner?
A: A correct answer should include statements such as:
- It is important to talk to the learner's family to get input on what types of reinforcers will be most effective with the learner.
- Selecting a wide range of possible reinforcers will help implement the discrete trial training.
- It is possible that the learner will be adequately reinforced with social praise (e.g. "high fives"), and verbal reinforcement.
Q: Describe a skill or behavior that could be taught using discrete trial training. What steps need to take place before implementing this strategy?
A: Answers to this question will vary. Each answer should be supported by content derived from the module, but should vary based on the individual learner and target skill or behavior being described.
Activities on this page are provided at both the introductory and advanced level and can be copied and used within existing professional development or university coursework.
Activities: Introductory Activities
Preparing to Implement Discrete Trial Training (DTT)
Identify a learner with ASD with whom you currently work. Think about how you might use DTT to promote a target behavior or skill. What steps need to be taken to implement DTT? What kind of data collection system would you develop and why? Who should be involved in the DTT implementation process?
Implementing DTT
Think of a learner with ASD with whom you currently work. How would you use DTT to promote a target behavior or skill? What materials and resources are necessary for implementing the discrete trials? How would you identify appropriate reinforcers?
Advanced Activities
Generalizing the Use of Target Skills
What steps would you take to help learners generalize their response to DTT? Once the discrete trials have been successfully completed how would you monitor generalization of the target skill to other settings? How would you respond to a lack of generalization?
Case Study Examples
Write a case study for a learner using DTT. Describe the learner, the target behavior and the DTT implementation process. Explain the outcomes of the implementation of DTT for this learner.
Research Activity
Review the list of research articles and evidence provided in the module and briefs on DTT. Complete a summary on the settings, skills and age ranges of the learners who participated. Identify the age group for the majority of participants in the research studies. Summarize the findings and share what you have learned with your fellow educators, practitioners and/or parents.
Teaching Others About Extinction
Arrange a time to demonstrate discrete trial training to your fellow practitioners. Use role playing and classroom examples to bring the strategy to life. Allow time for hands on practice and demonstration. Once the demonstration is complete, follow-up with team members who have implemented the strategy with an individual learner in their classroom.
